Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences

Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences is a prestigious institution located in Athens, Greece. It is one of the oldest and most respected universities in Greece, particularly well-known for its focus on social and political sciences. It was established in 1927 as the Panteios School of Political Sciences. It was founded by two Greeks from Alexandria, Georgios Fragoudis and Alexandros Pantos, whose contributions were instrumental in the establishment of the university. The initial study programme had five fields: Politics; Law; Economics; Sociology; Criminology and Corrections; Journalism, Geography and Philosophy. In 1939, the School was renamed “Panteion Higher Education School of Political Sciences and Civil Servants”, aiming to offer undergraduate and postgraduate education to civil servants. In 1989, the School’s departments increased from two (Social Sciences & Political Sciences) to nine and its name was changed to Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences. The university hosts several research centers and institutes, focusing on areas such as human rights, social policy, gender studies, and international relations. These centers contribute significantly to the academic output and reputation of the university.

Department of Sociology

The Department of Sociology of Panteion University is the first Department of Sociology in the country. It was founded in 1984 and has been operating since then cultivating the various disciplines of the science of sociology. The curriculum of the Department attempts to respond to the contemporary theoretical quests, to the modern directions of interdisciplinary management of social problems and to elaborate the practices for dealing with them. It tries to respond to the needs it generates and to the questions posed by the rapid changes and upgrades that characterize the world’s society nowadays. The largest concentration of teaching and research in criminology in Greece is to be found in the Department of Sociology at Panteion University offering a specialized degree in Criminology at the graduate and postgraduate level since 1985.
